McLaren looking to maintain momentum in Miami GP

McLaren’s Team Principal, Andrea Stella, has said the team will be focused on maintaining momentum ahead of the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix.

F1 returns this weekend for the first of three American races in the United States, at the Miami Grand Prix’s Miami International Autodrome.

McLaren enters the weekend following back-to-back victories after a strong start to the season. Oscar Piastri took over the lead of the drivers’ championship, overtaking Lando Norris for the top spot.

The defending constructors had a strong triple header, which featured trips to Japan, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, as they took two wins in two latter rounds – both at the hands of Piastri. This followed Max Verstappen’s victory at the Japanese Grand Prix, at the start of the triple header.

As such, McLaren leads the championship with a 77-point gap between them and their closest rivals, Mercedes (111pts).

The Miami Grand Prix marks a special place for the Woking-based team as it was the starting point for their successful title charge in 2024, pipping both Ferrari and Red Bull to the constructors title last year.

“After a successful triple header, we now head to the US for the Miami Grand Prix,” commented Stella. “This is a special race for us as it’s where Lando took his first F1 race win, which was a key turning point in our journey to becoming World Champions last year.

“This year, the level of competition is potentially even greater than last season, so we go to Miami focused on maintaining momentum and consolidating our progress.”

After losing the championship lead, the Briton now finds himself now 10 points behind his teammate in the drivers’ standings, with 89 points to his name.

The Miami Grand Prix has proven to be a special place for the McLaren driver as it was the venue where he secured his maiden victory, last year, when he benefitted from a late safety car stop after Williams’ Logan Sargeant crashed.

Ahead of the upcoming race weekend, Norris has confirmed he has spent time in the simulator last week to aid his preparation for the event. He said:

“Last week, I was back at the MTC with the team, and in the sim to prepare for Miami. It’s a Sprint weekend which means there are more points to race for.

“It should be another good weekend – bring it on!”
