On Wednesday, the FIA officially approved that the company formed in a combination of TWG Motorsports and General Motors, GM Performance Power Units LLC, will be an official power unit supplier from 2029.

The incoming 11th team, Cadillac Formula 1 Team, will expand the list of working teams who will supply their own power units on the grid, joining Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull-Ford, Honda and Audi.

“With this approval from the FIA, we will continue to accelerate our efforts to bring an American-built F1 power unit to the grid,’’ said the company’s CEO, Russ O’Blenes.

This comes after the team were approved to join the F1 grid from 2026, equipped with Ferrari power units, with ambitions to become a works team.

In the meantime, Ferrari confirmed they would supply the new entry team in the interim. Cadillac will fill the void that Kick Sauber will leave when they finally transition into the Audi works team for 2026.

In the announcement, FIA President, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, said:

“Over two years ago, the FIA approved the entry of an eleventh team into the FIA Formula One World Championship, guided by my vision to expand the grid and bring new talent and opportunity to our sport.

“Although the process was at times challenging, the progress we see today affirms the journey has been worthwhile.

“Welcoming GM Performance Power Units LLC. as an approved power unit supplier for the Championship starting in 2029 marks another step in the global expansion of Formula 1 and highlights the growing interest from world-class automotive manufacturers like General Motors.”

The FIA confirmed that development and testing for the F1 prototype engine technology are already ongoing, and there are plans to open a dedicated facility for the company.

Performance Power Unit LLC’s facility will be based near GM’s Charlotte Technical Centre in 2026.
