McLaren has been in dominant form all weekend, with either Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri topping the time sheets for all three practice sessions. The team did not let up for qualifying as Piastri sealed his second career pole position, pipping Mercedes’ George Russell.

However, drama unfolded after qualifying as both Mercedes drivers of Russell and Kimi Antonelli, were slapped with one-place grid penalties for failing to comply with the race director’s instructions.

In Q2, all the action was stopped as Haas’ Esteban Ocon spun and crashed on the exit of turn three. When the estimated time to restart was given, the Mercedes team released both cars into the pit lane.

This new precedent saw both drivers being slapped with sporting penalties as, in the eyes of the FIA Single Seater Sporting Director, a possible sporting advantage.

Hi, I'm Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion. I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I've loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
