After a dominant weekend, since the second practice session, Piastri delivered on this by securing pole position for the Bahrain Grand Prix, his second after the Chinese Grand Prix.
Piastri will start at the head of the grid for the second time in three races and will be joined alongside by Mercedes’ George Russell, who took provisional pole before the Aussie pipped him.
Piastri’s teammate, Norris, could only manage sixth best, so this will give the polesitter an advantage to cut down the deficit to Norris, the championship leader.
Norris lines up one place ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who only topped seventh for the grid. The two championship contenders are only separated by one point in the driver’s standings.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the top three as the Monegasque put in a lap time that was 0.334s slower than the fastest McLaren.
However, Russell’s second-place is under threat as he and teammate Kimi Antonelli are set to be investigated after the two cars were released into to pit lane before a confirmed start time was provided.
This came after Haas’ Esteban Ocon crashed early on in Q2. Fortunately, the Frenchman was okay and climbed out of his VF-25 and into the medical car.
It remains unclear if this will be a telling off for the team, who released them too early, or a sporting penalty (i.e. grid penalties).
Keep an eye on our socials as this development around the two Mercedes unfolds…
