A timeline of events: Haas F1 vs Uralkali
26th August 2024Haas F1 has seemingly settled their long-standing legal dispute with their former title sponsor, Uralkali, but how did it get to this point?

December 1, 2020 – Nikita Mazepin signs for Haas
Ahead of the penultimate race of the 2020 season, which followed Romain Grosjean’s miracle escape from his fiery Haas machinery at the Bahrain Grand Prix, Haas announced they were to sign Russian driver Nikita Mazepin for the 2021 season.
March 4, 2021 – Uralkali becomes the title sponsor of Haas F1
Ahead of the first race of the season, Haas announced Uralkali would be their title sponsor for the F1 entry with a familial connection to Mazepin as a result of his father, Dmitry Mazepin, who owned the company.
February 24, 2022 – Russia carries out ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine
After increasing tension on the Russian-Ukrainian border, President Vladimir Putin conducted – what he described as – a ‘special military operation’ which sent the Russian military into Ukraine thus igniting the current and ongoing war.
March 5, 2022 – Haas announces termination of title partnership and Nikita Mazepin’s F1 drive
Following the invasion of Ukraine, Haas terminated – with immediate effect – their sponsorship with title sponsor Uralkali and their driver contract with Mazepin. This ignites a long-standing legal dispute between the two parties.
June 12, 2024 – The arbitration panel rules on the dispute between Haas and Uralkali
In June, the legal dispute between the two parties was taken to arbitration in an attempt to resolve the issue between Haas and Uralkali.
Uralkali was the first to release a statement, on June 20, 2024, claiming the ruling had decided that Haas violated its contract and was ‘obliged’ to pay compensation to the Russian company.
Three days later, Haas reported that the ruling was found that the F1 team had acted lawfully but they were to retain the sponsorship fee before the termination and refund any balance to Uralkali.
July 16, 2024 – Uralkali claim Haas has not complied with the tribunal outcome
A month after the Arbitration panel provided its ruling on the dispute, Uralkali released a statement accusing Haas of being ‘in defiance’ against the outcome.
The Russian company claimed that Haas had not paid the outstanding balance – plus interest and fees – owed to Uralkali, plus the 2021 car promised in the sponsorship agreement.
August 22, 2024 – Haas F1 assets stopped from leaving the Netherlands
On the eve of the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix, it was reported that the police and bailiffs were in the Haas paddock evaluating the team’s assets. According to Autosport, the team were told that they could not move their equipment or cars from the country until the payment was made.
August 26, 2024 – Haas F1 is free to leave Zandvoort
On Monday, the day after the Dutch Grand Prix, it was announced that Haas was free to leave the Netherlands after Uralkali confirmed they had received the payment owed (including interest and fees) and the race car.
This announcement seemingly has now put the legal dispute to bed and will close the tedious, legally-troubled chapter for both parties.
