F1 Tyre Strategies: one-stop to be the preferred option for Dutch GP

Following a weekend of mixed weather, the 19 drivers who competed in qualifying will be dialled in for the race later on this afternoon after the competitive session was dry.

However, Williams’ Logan Sargeant will need to get up to speed in the race itself after he missed out on qualifying after his heavy third practice crash, in the wet conditions.

All of the competing drivers will be faced with 72 laps around the seaside Zandvoort Circuit and, according to Pirelli, the one-stop will be the preferred choice.

In the pre-race release, Pirelli confirmed some of the tyre strategies the drivers and team could use with three of four being a one-stop option.

The first stood as the soft/hard option with drivers expected to pit within lap 24-30 to move onto the hards. Alternatively, they can pit four laps later and transition, in between laps 28-33, to go onto the mediums until the chequered flag.

Going in the other direction, potentially for those who are starting outside the top 10, drivers could start on the hard tyres and pit on laps 43-48 to slap on a pair of softs for an aggressive finish to the end.

The fourth option is a two-stop strategy with the quickest option going softs/mediums/softs which could be more beneficial if there is an early safety car.

Pirelli states the two-stop option could work if the teams pit extremely early, from lap 20-26 to go onto the mediums and pitting once more from lap 47-53 to go back onto the softs.
