The sun was shining over the Netherlands’ seaside Zandvoort Circuit. Still, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton had a dark cloud hanging overhead as the seven-time world champion went 12th fastest in Q2, exiting qualifying in the process.

To rub salt into the wound, Briton has been compounded with a three-place grid penalty after he impeded Perez in the Q1, at turn nine. As a result, it means the world champion will start the Dutch race from 15th rather than 12th.

In Q1, Hamilton was trying to stay out of the way of those behind him, including Perez, as he steered wide at turn nine and remained on the outside line – intentionally giving way to Red Bull’s #11 car.

Perez, who was on a fast lap, took the natural racing line into the ninth corner but had to lift to avoid the slow-moving #44 Mercedes who had veered onto the racing line, on the exit of the corner. The Mexican driver soon made his opinion clear with an angry response from the over the team radio.

Despite slowing down, the stewards believed Hamilton could’ve slowed down further ‘in order not to impede the other car,’ as such the stewards deemed the impeding was unnecessary in terms of the regulations.

Hi, I'm Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion. I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I've loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
