Albon disqualified for technical infringement following Dutch GP post-qualifying checks

Williams’ Alexander Albon has been disqualified from qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix after it was found that his car was outside the ‘regulatory volume.’

Albon enjoyed a productive day under the sun in Zandvoort for the first qualifying session after the annual two-week summer break and qualified eighth, in between the two Aston Martin’s of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.

However, following post-qualifying scrutineering checks, it was found that the floor body of Albon’s car was ‘outside the regulatory volume.’ The matter was quickly escalated to the stewards. 

Following the summons, the stewards heard from the team representatives who did not dispute the calibration of the FIA measuring system but claimed their measurements produced different results. 

Despite this, the stewards deemed the FIA’s systems in Parc Ferme were more relevant and trusted that the ‘due process’ had been followed and disqualified Albon from Qualifying. 

As a result, this means everyone from eighth and below will now move up one position. This will add some comfort to Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton who had just received a grid drop for impeding Red Bull Racing’s Sergio Perez. 

Following the news, Williams released a statement confirming that they were ‘disappointed’ with the outcome and will carry out an investigation as a result. 

“Unfortunately, Alex has been disqualified from Qualifying today due to his floor body being outside the regulatory volume set by the FIA” Williams said. “We are incredibly disappointed with this outcome and will be carrying out a thorough investigation and will provide an update soon.”
