Stroll has been slapped with a reprimand of the season for going through the pit exit when the exit traffic light was displaying red.
In a wet-dry qualifying session, many drivers pulled into the pit lane when the conditions dried in Q1 to swap over from the intermediates to the soft tyres.
One driver was Stroll, whose garage was at the end of the pit lane. Unbeknownst to him, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez lost it into Copse on his soft-tyre run which resulted in a red flag.
According to the steward’s report, when the red flag was flown and the pit exit subsequently closed the Canadian had 0.8s to react to the red light as it transitioned from green to red.
Due to the short time to react and ‘the fact that the track was red-flagged,’ the stewards opted to reprimand Stroll as the onus remains on the driver ‘to always comply with the signal at the pit exit.’
In the report, the Stewards said:
“Car 18 pulled out of its pit which was located at the far end of the Pit Lane, and 0.8 seconds prior to crossing the Pit Exit line, the red light was displayed.
“In mitigation of penalty, the Stewards considered the short time available for the driver to react, the fact that the track was red-flagged anyway so no possible advantage could be gained from Car 18 completing the lap, and the fact that the Pit Lane was wet and the Car was on slick tyres, so possibly would have stopped over the exit line.
“However it is the driver’s responsibility to always comply with the signal at the Pit Exit therefore the penalty of a Reprimand is imposed. This is the minimum penalty recommended in the Penalty Guidelines.”
This marks the second reprimand of the season for Stroll following his incident with Lewis Hamilton in practice at the Spanish Grand Prix.
