Norris completes Friday clean sweep at British GP with fastest FP2 lap

5th July 2024 0 By Kamron Kent

McLaren’s Lando Norris completed a clean sweep of Friday’s action by taking the fastest lap in FP2, as he did in FP1 at the British Grand Prix.

It was a relatively dry session for the second and final practice session of the day as Norris topped the timing boards ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.

With pending rain showers on the horizon, many drivers were eager to get straight out on track to get their programmes underway with Haas’ Kevin Magnussen being the last driver out on circuit.

The rain finally came with six minutes to go and only a select few drivers returned to the track, equipped with the green-walled intermediate tyres.

How did FP2 end…

So, Norris completed the clean sweep of action as he completed both Friday practice sessions at the top of the timing boards with a 1m 26.880s lap time.

Piastri and Perez completed the top three in second and third, 0.331s and 0.434s behind Norris’ pace respectively.

Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg was best of the rest in fourth place ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, in fifth, who had voiced his struggles with his SF-24 in the early stages.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton led the bottom five, inside the top 10, in sixth ahead of Max Verstappen (Red Bull), Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) and George Russell (Mercedes) in order of seventh to 10th.

Stroll’s teammate, Fernando Alonso led the bottom 10 with a lap time that was 0.823s off Norris’ pace in 11th ahead of Kick Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas and Williams’ Alexander Albon, in 12th and 13th respectively.

This left both Alpine’s of Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon to round out the top 15, in 14th and 15th.

Yuki Tsunoda was the leading RB driver in 16th with his teammate, Daniel Ricciardo 19th fastest overall. This left Williams’ Logan Sargeant and Kick Sauber’s Guanyu Zhou to sandwich themselves in between the two RB’s in 17th and 18th.

Magnussen completed the running order in 20th with a lap time that was 1.5s away from Norris’ benchmark.
