Antonelli proves he delivers following maiden F2 win in soaking conditions

Prema’s Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured his maiden Formula 2 victory in a rain-soaked race, proving he can deliver strong performances in challenging conditions.

Rain hindered running at Silverstone on Saturday which resulted in Formula 3 being postponed later in the day. However, Formula 2 was still able to continue on with their scheduled race.

It wasn’t a straight-forward race as the conditions worsened as a result of the rain which brought out yellow flags and a red flag throughout the race duration.

Antonelli led the pack to racing conditions from the reverse-grid pole position at the start and from the subsequent restarts. From there, the Italian driver was not threatened from the position as he went on to secure his maiden F2 win at Silverstone.

The F2 racer, who has been linked with potential Formula 1 seats for 2025, triumphed in changeable conditions as Rodin Carlin’s  Zane Maloney and Invicta Racing’s Gabriel Bortoleto completed the podium – on track – in second and third respectively.

Bortoleto was later given a post-race penalty which promoted his teammate, Kush Maini, to the final podium spot.

In an action-packed race, Antonelli’s teammate, Oliver Bearman – who has been confirmed with Haas in 2025 – was forced to retire in his home event on lap 16 after he took a trip over the gravel at Copse corner.

The F1 prospect showed that he can deliver in treacherous conditions and gave Prema their second win of the season following Bearman’s first of the year in Austria, last week.

The challenging conditions that faced the Italian on Saturday showed he could deliver in tricky conditions when other drivers faltered. In turn, this will hopefully increase his stock market value to those who are looking to fulfil their F1 seats ahead of the upcoming season.

Antonelli has been heavily linked to a move to Formula 1 – next year – with rumours being made that he may partner up with George Russell at Mercedes, replacing the team’s seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton who will go to Ferrari next year.

If rumours are to be believed, the Prema driver may enter the F1 grid before his teammate does as he has been linked to potentially replace Williams Logan Sargeant mid-season.
