Mercedes showcase striking W15 as team look to chase down Red Bull

Mercedes have finally revealed the W15 ahead of the 2024 Formula One world championship as the team looks to chase down Red Bull Racing. 

At Silverstone, on Wednesday February 14, the former world champions revealed their 2024 title challenger ahead of a private shakedown session. 

Following a second-place finish in the 2023 world championship, behind Red Bull but vitally ahead of Scuderia Ferrari, the team will be looking to improve on their targets for the upcoming campaign.

The new W15 will also take a hybrid colour scheme, incorporating the team’s historic Silver colour with the team’s modern black design. 

The nose will showcase the silver with it fading to black for the remainder of the chassis. Petronas’ iconic green – alongside the INEOS red – sidelines the nose splitting silver from the black colours. 

“We know we have a mountain to climb to fight at the very front. There are no miracles in this sport, but our ambition and determination are strong,” said Toto Wolff, Team Principal and CEO of Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team. 

“Since charting this new course development has progressed well. We had several items on our priority list for this car. We will soon see if we’ve made the step we aimed for.”

Following a dismal opening race at the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix, where the team’s drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finished fifth and seventh respectively, the team looked for a new direction. 

During the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix, Mercedes brought the new side-pod package, scrapping the teams zero-pod design concept, and the team have evolved this going into 2024. 

Heading into 2024, the team has made some new changes around the chassis and gearbox casing as they hunt for more aerodynamic efficiency and less drag. 

According to Mercedes Technical Director, James Allison, the team have also worked hard to ensure the cars axles ‘retain better control of the tyre’ as the W14 was ‘unpredictable.’

On the new changes, Allison said:

“A new car enables the team to make bigger alterations that are not possible during the season. These are decisions that are taken during  the preceding summer. 

“A big focus has been on improving the previous car’s unpredictable rear axle. We have worked hard to ensure that both axles, but particularly the rear axle retain better control of the tyre than on the W14.”

“There’s also been some housekeeping on areas in which we had room for improvement, including the DRS effect, and pit stop performance.”

Mercedes’ reveal of the W15 is the penultimate car launch of the season, Red Bull Racing is the next – and last – team to showcase their 2024 title defender, on February 15.
