Porsche Supercup Austria: Dylan Pereira leads lights to flag
10th July 2022BWT Lechner Racing’s Dylan Pereira commanded the race win after he led from lights to flag while Team GP Elite’s Larry Ten Voorde was hit out of the race.
How the race unfolded…
It was a great start by BWT Lecher Racing’s Dylan Pereira, while his teammate, Harry King, had a poor start and was quickly swallowed up by the likes of Team GP’s Larry Ten Voorde and SSR Huber Racing’s Laurin Heinrich.
After the first lap, the top five stood as; Pereira, Ten Voorde, Heinrich, King and Marvin Klein (CLRT).
When the Supercup completed its opening laps, the safety car was deployed. ID Racing’s Michael Verhagen, who started the race 26th, was sent onto the gravel trap at turn four which brought out the safety car as he made contact with the midfield runners.
At the end of three, the safety car was recalled back into the pit lane and Pereira took control of the field’s pace. As he drove out of turn eight, the BWT driver slowed down to a crawl before he put his foot down on the run into turn nine.
As the session reached its halfway point, Pereira checked out in front with a four-second lead over his closest rival, Ten Voorde.
Dorian Boccolacci was seen, down the back straight, with suspected suspension damage as his car smoked away down to turn four. As a result, the double waved yellow flags were waved in sector two. However, this was quickly upgraded to a safety car at the end of lap 11.
This intervention had eliminated Pereira’s established gap between himself and Ten Voorde, in second place.
At the end of lap 13, Pereira got the race back underway as he bolted down into turn nine.
In the dying laps, Klein made a big mistake on lap 15 as he crashed into the side of Ten Voorde’s rear bumper into turn three. This dropped the reigning world down the field as the CLRT driver suffered serve damage as his radiator began to leak.
While, Ten Voorde limped over to a service area, just on the exit of turn three, and parked his Porsche off the track to retire from the race.
As a result of the contact, this allowed Heinrich to inherit P2 ahead of BWT’s Bastian Buus who moved up to P3.
For the first time, in this session, FACH Auto Tech’s Jukka Honkavuori was the first driver to be slapped with a five-second time penalty for exceeding track limits too many times.
