Ross Chastain makes controversial move during Xfinity 500
31st October 2022Trackhouse Racing’s Ross Chastain made a daring move, along the concrete barrier of the Martinsville Speedway, which secured him a place in the Championship race.
While Christopher Bell secured the victory at the Martinsville track, it was Chastain who stole the show with his daring, wall-riding, maneuver.
On the final lap, Chastain sat in 10th place but a daring move, straight out of a video game, put the American in fifth place by the time he hit the chequered flag.
The Trackhouse driver intentionally used the barrier as a guide to push his car around the final two corners. With his foot flat to the floor, it was an incredible – and rather dangerous – move which secured his position in the NASCAR Championship 4 race, on November 6.
In the process, the Chevrolet Camaro driver passed five cars along the outside and could’ve easily had taken fourth place – had it not been for RFK Racing’s Brad Keselowski blocking his advance.
Have a look at the daring move below:
Speaking after the race, Chastain said the move was inspired by the EA Sports NASCAR 2005 game, in the interview he said:
“I played alot of NASCAR 2005 on the GameCube with Chad growing up and you could get away with it and I never knew if it would actually work.
“I did that when I was eight years old. I just made the choice.
“I grabbed fifth gear down the back and full committed. When I got up against the wall, I basically let go of the wheel [and] just hope I didn’t catch the turn four access gate or something crazy.”
Following the incident, and the reward Chastain earned from it, it quickly became a controversial topic. While NASCAR deemed the move was ‘within the bounds of the rule book,’ the sport is expected to discuss any driver concerns this week.
