Formula 1 reveal venues for 2023 sprint races
7th December 2022Formula 1 have finally revealed the venues which will hold the sports’ six sprint races across the 2023 season.
Since the 2021 season, F1 has undergone a new system to determine the grid order ahead of grand prix races.
As a result of its popularity, the sport has increased the total number of sprint qualifying sessions to six – three more than its usual three races per year.
The six venues to host a Sprint Race this season will be:
- Azerbaijan (28 – 30 April)
- Austria (June 30 – July 2)
- Belgium (July 28 – 30)
- Qatar (October 6 – 8)
- United States of America (October 20 – 22)
- Brazil (November 3 – 5)
Following the news, Formula 1 President and CEO, Stefano Domenicali said:
“We have seen a hugely positive reaction to the F1 Sprint events during the first two years of its running, and we can’t wait to bring even more action to fans with six events next year, including our first US F1 Sprint in Austin.
“The introduction of the F1 Sprint has created a race weekend that includes three days of competitive racing action and brings more entertainment to fans of the sport as well as additional value for key stakeholders including teams, broadcasters, partners, and host venues.”
The sport found the new format has been successful in engaging fans and increasing its audience sizes. As a result, it has increased viewership to the F1 weekend compared to that of its usual Friday free practice sessions.
The Sprint format means the paying audience, at the track, get more for their money as well as the fans back in their homes.
It provides meaningful running across the entire weekend as the usual knock-out qualifying commences on Friday (in place of Free Practice 2), followed by the Sprint on Saturday which sets the grid for the main event on Sunday.
FIA President, Mohammed Ben Sulayem said:
“Following strong collaboration between the FIA and FOM, and the approval of the World Motor Sport Council, we are pleased to reveal the six events for Sprints for the 2023 season. We look forward to this exciting addition to the calendar.”
