Frederic Vasseur is set to join Ferrari in the new year, as both Team Principle and General Manager, the team has announced.

It was announced, earlier on today that Vasseur was set to leave Alfa Romeo at the end of the year. Now, Ferrari have announced he will replace their outgoing team principle, Mattia Binotto at Maranello.

In their first year back in competitive form, Binotto resigned from Ferrari last month and Vasseur was quickly rumoured to replace him – as reported by Italian news outlet, Gazzetta dello Sport.

Now, with a competitive package at Ferrari, Vasseur will join one of the biggest jobs in motorsport in the hopes that his experience can drive to both titles in 2023.

On the announcement, Vasseur said:

“I am truly delighted and honoured to take over the leadership of Scuderia Ferrari as Team Principal.

“As someone who has always held a lifelong passion for motorsport, Ferrari has always represented the very pinnacle of the racing world to me.

“I look forward to working with the talented and truly passionate team in Maranello to honour the history and heritage of the Scuderia and deliver for our Tifosi around the world.”

The former Alfa Romeo team principle joined Sauber in 2017 as the Swiss-based outfit sat in 10th and last in the constructors championship.

Under his leadership, the team secured their best constructors finish – in a decade – with sixth-place this year.

Commenting on the appointment, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna said:

“We are delighted to welcome Fred Vasseur to Ferrari as our Team Principal.

“Throughout his career he has successfully combined his technical strengths as a trained engineer with a consistent ability to bring out the best in his drivers and teams.

“This approach and his leadership are what we need to push Ferrari forward with renewed energy.”

Vasseur is set to join the team on January 9, while Alfa Romeo are due to appoint his replacement in due course.
