F1 officially cancels Chinese Grand Prix

Formula 1 have officially confirmed the Chinese Grand Prix will not be featured on their 24-race calendar.

The Chinese Grand Prix was put under threat of not appearing on the 2023 calendar, after reports trouble stemmed from the country’s covid laws.

As such, this will be the fourth year – in a row – that China has been removed from the calendar since the Coronavirus Pandemic broke out. The last time F1 raced in Shanghai was back in 2019.

Formula 1 have been in talks with ‘the promoter and relevant authorities’ to find a solution.

However, on Friday, F1 stated:

“Formula 1 can confirm, following dialogue with the promoter and relevant authorities, that the 2023 Chinese Grand Prix will not take place due to the ongoing difficulties presented by the COVID-19 situation.”

The race was set to be the fourth race of the season, between Melbourne (round three) and Azerbaijan (round four).

While it was initially believed F1 would not seek a replacement for the Chinese GP, if it is to be removed, the sport is currently looking at ‘alternative options.’

F1 said:

“Formula 1 is assessing alternative options to replace the slot on the 2023 calendar and will provide an update on this in due course.”

The reason behind China’s removal comes down to the country’s difficulties as they response to the populations reaction which regard its Covid laws.

Citizens have been seen conducting nationwide protests as they call for an end to lockdowns. However, the protests have been swiftly smothered through heavy police presence, online censorship and surveillance of the country’s population.

That’s it for the article; F1 officially cancels Chinese Grand Prix?
