Chinese Grand Prix expected to be cancelled… again

According to reports, the Chinese Grand Prix is expected to be removed from the 2023 calendar as a result of the country’s zero-covid policy.

The Chinese Grand Prix is rumoured to be cancelled from the 24-race Formula 1 calendar, next season. China has not held a race since 2019 as a result of the Coronavirus Pandemic which erupted at the end of 2019 – in the country.

However, in the provisional 2023 calendar, the sports potential return to China has been jeopardised by the country’s zero-covid policies.

In a report by the BBC, the sport believes they can’t risk teams and personnel going to race in Shanghai with a potential risk of being placed into a government-supervised facility if they are caught with Covid.

Named ‘dynamic zero,’ according to Reuters, the country understands small outbreaks are likely to occur.

The policy, itself, is not aiming to see zero cases of Covid at all-times, instead the country are expected to take ‘dynamic’ action when cases do occur through a two-pronged approach: prevention and containment.

Those who are found, or expected, to have Covid-19 will be ordered to isolate at home or placed under quarantine at a government facility.

Those who arrive to the country will be expected to undergo a seven-day quarantine at a government-supervised facility with three days of isolation at home.

If China is axed from the 2023 calendar, it will demote the 24-race calendar down to 23 races.

It is believed the sport will not seek a replacement for the Chinese Grand Prix, in the event that its removed.

As a result of the cancellation, the gap will leave a four-week gap between the Australian Grand Prix (April 2) and the Azerbaijan Grand Prix (April 30).

While F1 has not confirmed its removal from the calendar, a statement regarding the Chinese Grand Prix’s position on the 2023 calendar is expected to be imminent.

That’s it for the article; Chinese Grand Prix expected to be cancelled… again!
