Mercedes can’t assume their recent performance will continue at British Grand Prix

Last time out, Mercedes was able to carry home a double-podium finish with George Russell converting his pole position into the race win with Kimi Antonelli rounding out the podium, in third, behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
However, their team boss, Wolff, doesn’t believe the team are in a position to be believe their in a position to carry that performance over to Silverstone. Ahead of the British Grand Prix, Wolff said:
“Silverstone is one of the standout races on the calendar. It’s a great circuit, the fans create a unique atmosphere, and with our factories just a few miles away, it is something of a home race for us. Once we take to the track though, it’s about performance, not the occasion.
“We delivered well in Austria with a double podium, but we are not in a position where we can assume that carries over. The field is too tight, the order is changing too quickly, and what looked competitive one week can look very different the next. That’s the reality of where F1 is right now.”
As of now, Mercedes has won every Grand Prix on the calendar except for the Barcelona-Catalunya race, which was won by their former seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton.
However, the Austrian has said that when one team finds a step forward, others around them react, bringing their own upgrades to close the gap to Mercedes out front.
Due to this, the fight in the midfield remains extremely tight, whilst the front-runners continue to find ways to inch closer to the Brackley-based team, producing an ever-tightening battle in car development as the season wages on.
“We are in a close development fight,” Wolff continued. “One team finds a step, others react, and it compresses or changes the order. Consistency has been our strength so far and that comes from discipline and doing the basics right. Our focus is on continuing to execute well, bring performance to the car where we can, and not give away anything on track.
