The South Korean team, Hyundai, have had a troubled season with a mix of tarmac, snow and gravel events, with asphalt being their weakest surface of the season thus far.

However, following Rally Japan, the WRC will embark on seven successive gravel events spanning from Greece, the next event, up until the season finale in Saudi Arabia.

But Hyundai have been proven to be competitive on this surface, with Thierry Neuville claiming his first win of the season for the South Korean marquee. As such, Fourmaux is hoping to get some victories under their belt so the team can re-enter the title fight. He said:

“Our target for the second half of the season is to get some victories to be back on track for the championship fight. Last year we finished third here, which was good, but we can do better.

“It’s been quite a tough first half of the season due to the amount of tarmac events, where we struggled a bit more, but we are in a good position to be very competitive for the rest of the season.”

With a mix of surfaces, Toyota almost completed a whitewash of rally wins, winning all but one event in the first half of the season: Portugal, which was won by Neuville. As a result, the Japanese manufacturer currently heads the WRC manufacturer standings with 370 points to their name, 127 points ahead of Hyundai (243pts).

More than Machine success increases WRC profile

Last time out in Greece, Fourmaux secured a third-place position behind Hyundai’s winner Ott Tanak and Toyota’s Sebastien Ogier. The Frenchman is looking to better his finishing position as he will enjoy a later starting position.

It means he will have better conditions to deal with on the stages, with those going out ahead cleaning and sweeping the road for those behind. However, Fourmaux already sits cautiously ahead of the event, understanding the extra risks a later position poses. He said:

“I’m really looking forward to Acropolis Rally and the return to gravel. At this event, we’re really trying to avoid any punctures, but also reading the grip and the compressions, with bumps and crests threatening to kick the car off in a different direction.

“Starting later in the running order will help you with cleaner lines when it’s dry, which is a clear advantage compared to the cars in front cleaning the road and improving the conditions, however there is also more tyre wear and the risk of loose rocks.
