Lewis Hamilton takes maiden Ferrari grand prix win at Barcelona-Catalunya

Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton has taken his first-ever Grand Prix win with the Italian squad at the Formula 1 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.

Hamilton has charged out front in Barcelona, at the Spanish track, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, to claim his 106th career victory, and his first-ever Grand Prix win with Ferrari.

The seven-time world champion started on the front row, alongside his former Mercedes teammate, George Russell, who claimed pole by 0.064 seconds over the multiple world champion. When the lights went out, Russell managed to maintain his lead, and it looked as if the race win was all but certain.

However, after a mid-race stop, Hamilton had the pace to undercut the leading Mercedes, which fell in behind him after their final stops, with the Ferrari #44 taking the lead. Making use of Fernando Alonso’s retirement and the succeeding Virtual Safety Car, Hamilton completed his final stop under the VSC and maintained the race lead.

When the track went green, Mercedes were not able to respond to Ferrari’s pace as Hamilton managed to edge out a lead of over 15 seconds by the chequered flag. He was joined on the podium by Russell and McLaren’s reigning world champion, Lando Norris, in second and third, respectively.

Mercedes championship leader, Kimi Antonelli, would’ve joined them on the podium, having overtaken Russell for second. However, reliability woes came back to bite the championship leader, who had to stop on track in turn six and retire.

Whilst this is Hamilton’s first Grand Prix win for Ferrari, it is not the first win for the seven-time world champion that he has achieved with the team, after he took the sprint win at the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix sprint race.

With Hamilton, Russell and Norris making up the podium in Barcelona, it also marked the first time since the 1968 United States Grand Prix, when the sport enjoyed an all-British podium.

Following Antonelli’s retirement and Hamilton’s victory, it means the seven-time world champion enters talks regarding the championship fight as he trails the Mercedes driver by 41 points.
