Miami Grand Prix: Norris converts pole into win to lead McLaren 1-2

McLaren’s Lando Norris has headed a 1-2 finish at the Miami Grand Prix sprint race as the defending world champion beat Oscar Piastri and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Norris has returned to winning ways after a troubled start to the season, converting his sprint pole position into the sprint victory. In addition, the Briton headed a McLaren 1-2 as his Australian teammate, Oscar Piastri, finished in second place.

The defending world champion enjoyed a strong sprint at the Miami GP, maintaining the race lead at lights out before edging his way out in front to secure the sprint win in a controlled fashion.

Further back, Piastri was put under later pressure by Leclerc, who attempted to mount a challenge for P2, having jumped Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli at the race start. By the chequered flag, the Monegasque’s late charge fizzled out to nothing.

There was late drama that quickly followed the race conclusion as Antonelli was given a five-second time penalty for exceeding track limit violations.

The championship leader had finished fourth on track, but ultimately dropped to sixth overall, promoting Mercedes’ George Russell and Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, in fourth and fifth, respectively.

However, that was not the only drama of the sprint. Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg wasn’t able to participate in the race after he was forced to retire at turn 17 on the out-laps to the grid. His car started to smoke down the back straight before it quickly caught fire.

Thankfully, the German driver was able to jump clear of his car. But it will be a big repair job for the Audi mechanics ahead of qualifying, later today.

Arvid Lindblad, Racing Bulls, was the second retirement from the sprint and a second non-starter. The Briton was set to start from the pit lane at the Miami GP sprint, but the Racing Bulls driver failed to make it out onto the circuit and was classed as a retirement.
