Azerbaijan stood as the first attempt for McLaren to retain their constructors’ title for a second consecutive season, for the first time since the 1988 to 1991 seasons. More recently, heading into the summer break, the talk of the constructors’ title became a question of when, rather than if.
However, both McLarens started out of position in Baku, with Oscar Piastri crashing out in qualifying, and Norris managing to top seventh.
The McLaren’s opportunity to take home the title was made much harder after Piastri crashed on the first lap, at turn five, leaving it all for Norris to do. Although the Briton was able to take the chequered flag, his seventh-place finish was not enough to secure the title for McLaren, forcing it to roll on to this weekend.
So, how can McLaren seal the world title this weekend?
The requirement
With a whopping 623 points in total currently in the standings, 333 points separate the Woking-based team from their closest championship contenders, Mercedes, who overtook Ferrari for second place in the constructors.
As it stands, with a maximum of 346 points left to be scored, including sprint race weekends, McLaren requires only 13 points to take the title under the lights in Singapore.
Therefore, even if one of the drivers achieves a podium or a win and the other retires, McLaren will be the 2025 World Constructors’ Champions, just as long as the team earn the needed points.
Even if Mercedes took the win and followed it up with a 1-2 finish, if McLaren took home the needed points despite Mercedes’ win, the championship gap would be too much for the Silver Arrows to change going into the last six races of the season.
Additionally, if McLaren takes the title in Singapore, it means the Woking-based team will tie the record for the most races left after taking the title. Currently, it’s held by Red Bull Racing with six races remaining back in 2023, after their dominant run, having won all but one race that season.
If, for some reason, they do not take the title in Singapore, the championship will roll on again to Austin for the United States Grand Prix on October 17 to 19.
