Leclerc and Sainz have been left to hire a van to complete their journey back home after a mixed time for the two drivers, respectively.
The Ferrari driver finished the first flyaway race down in ninth, after a botched attempt by Lewis Hamilton to give the position back, compounded by engine problems, Ferrari confirms.
On the other hand, Sainz secured his first podium finish for Williams as the Spaniard, who had started the race in second, took home third behind Red Bull’s winner Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ George Russell.
According to Leclerc’s Instagram story, the two were diverted to Italy after a bad storm in Nice stopped them from landing there to get home.
“So after a very difficult weekend in Baku,” said Leclerc on Instagram. “I thought it couldn’t get any worse but…”
The camera is then turned around to show a tunnel they are driving through, with Sainz behind the wheel of the van.
“[we’re] in the middle of Italy,” continued Sainz. “We were diverted for a storm, we couldn’t land in Nice. So, we landed in the middle of Italy. We rented a van and now we’re on our way to Monaco.
“Two-hour drive that we will make in an hour and a half.”
As it currently stands, a moderate weather warning remains in place for rain and flooding. It is followed by yellow weather warnings around country, confirmed by Meteo France.
