McLaren has replaced Red Bull Racing in the first cycle of the ground affect era as one of the most dominating forces on the grid so far. As such, Azerbaijan marks the first opportunity that the Woking-based team can wrap up the title.

More recently, it has been more of a case when McLaren wins the championship, rather than if they win it. As it currently stands, McLaren have taken 12 victories of the 16 races completed, taking up a staggering 75% of race wins so far this season.

In total, it means the Woking-based team hold the championship lead with 617 points to their name, a staggering 337 points ahead of second-placed Ferrari.

So, how can they win the title in 2025?

Heading into Baku, there is a total of 389 points remaining across the remaining eight races, and it will drop to 346 points after this weekend in Baku.

So, for McLaren to return as consecutive world champions from the 1988 to 1991 seasons, after their title success last year, they must be 346 points ahead of their closest rivals.

A 1-2 finish for McLaren would secure their title ambitions this season, leaving only the drivers title to be decided between their drivers, who are the ever-more likely contenders for the championship.

How McLaren will be constructors champions in Baku;

  • Outscore Ferrari by nine points
  • Not outscored by Mercedes by 12 points or more
  • Not outscored by Red Bull by 33 points or more

However, in the chance Ferrari seals a victory in Baku, it means the championship title would be pushed back to at least the Singapore Grand Prix, two weeks later.

Additionally, if McLaren do win the championship this weekend, they will set the new record for sealing the constructors title with the most races left.

Red Bull are the current record holders after their dominating 2023 season, where they won all but one race that season. The Milton Keynes team secured the title with six races left to go in 2023.

But, if McLaren clinch the title, they will take the record as seven races will remain after the Baku race.
