Verstappen pulled together a magical pole lap on Saturday, taking home the fastest lap in the sport’s history, in average speed, and the four-time world champion followed this up with a dominant victory.

It marks his third win of the season, in a difficult season where his fifth consecutive title looks unlikely with every passing race weekend, and it makes it his 66th career win.

The Italian Grand Prix, in 2025, now stands as the fastest race in F1’s history with an average speed of 250.706kph. It stands as the ninth fastest grand prix of all time, with an elapsed race time of one hour, 13 minutes and 24.325 seconds.

The four-time world champion beat the previous record that was held by the famous seven-time world champion, Michael Schumacher, at the 2003 Italian GP, whose average speed was 247.586kph.

The Red Bull driver dominated the race, despite being pushed off the circuit at the end of the first lap, and having to allow McLaren’s Lando Norris through to lead. However, it wasn’t long before the Dutchman regained the lead, and he looked in control from there on out.

McLaren had a dilemma as they worked their way to try and cement their second and third places, having extended their first stint on the medium tyres until the end, when they were pitted inside the final 10 laps for the soft compounds.

Oscar Piastri pitted first of the two McLarens and maintained his third place until Norris pitted. The Briton had a slow stop due to a mechanical problem with the wheel gun on the front-left, prompting a 5.9-second stop. It allowed Piastri to slide through into second.

However, the two drivers quickly reverted positions and were free to fight until the chequered flag.

In the end, Verstappen took the win ahead of Norris and Piastri in second. It means both drivers will cut into Piastri’s championship lead, with Verstappen sitting 94 points behind the Australian, while Norris sits 31 points back.

For the constructors’ championship, McLaren continues to be the dominating force out front, extending their championship total to 617 points, 337 ahead of Ferrari.

Next up is the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and it is suspected that it could be McLaren’s first opportunity to seal the constructors’ championship.

According to reports, the team need to hold 346 points over their second-placed rivals at the end of the next race to retain their championship title, 9 points more than they do now.
