McLaren have reportedly found the issue that resulted in Norris’s untimely retirement at the Dutch Grand Prix, and have vowed to complete a full review ahead of this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix.

It is the first mechanical problem Norris has suffered since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, when he had a problem with his gearbox. It will also be McLaren’s first mechanical retirement since the 2023 USA Grand Prix, when Oscar Piastri suffered problems with overheating.

With a win and a retirement in the same race, McLaren Team Principal, Andrea Stella, has expressed the team has experienced ‘the two sides of motorsport,’ following Oscar Piastri’s victory and Norris’ retirment.

The team has confirmed the issue has been identified on ‘the chassis side,’ and confirm they will complete a full review ahead of the upcoming race weekend in Monza.

“We’ve identified an issue on the chassis side, and we will do a full review before we go racing again in Monza,” said McLaren Team Principal, Andrea Stella

“This is the first technical problem for the team after a long run of faultless reliability. Thank you to the entire team for their continued effort which led to another victory, as we continue our journey together.”

At the Dutch Grand Prix, last weekend, McLaren were running 1-2 provisionally heading into the final laps, with championship leader Oscar Piastri leading Norris.

However, on lap 65, Norris reported an issue with his car and he quickly retired from the race with smoke coming out of his championship contender.

The retirement now opens up the once-tight championship fight between the two McLaren teammates, opening it up from nine points to 34 points ahead of the upcoming Italian GP.

“I was having a good race until that point,” commented Norris. “To have been that close to the car ahead throughout the race isn’t easy at Zandvoort, so I’m pleased with my performance.

“My focus switches straight to Monza.”
