Tyre Strategies: possible options for F1 Dutch Grand Prix

Formula 1 returns for the Dutch Grand Prix, a typical one-stopper, but what are the possible tyre strategies for the grid ahead of their first race since the summer break?

Ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, the weather forecast had race day to be a wet one, but it looks like the race will be dry with sunny intervals expected throughout the afternoon, and a light rain shower at night, according to BBC Weather.

As such, it means there could be a few tyre options for this weekend for those on the grid at the Zandvoort Circuit, situated along the Dutch coast.

Typically, the Dutch Grand Prix has been a one-stop race in dry conditions, due to the reduced speed limit of 60kph. However, this weekend, the pit lane has increased in speed, up to 80kph, in the hope of enticing two-stop strategies.

Most drivers have a set of fresh hard and medium compound tyres, with both Aston Martin drivers holding onto two fresh sets of the hard tyre. The exception to this is the Ferrari pairing of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, who have one used set of hards and one set of medium tyres.

Whilst just over half the grid still hold onto a fresh set of soft compound tyres. More notably, Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Haas’ Oliver Bearman have three sets of unused soft tyres.

So, what are the possible tyre strategies?

According to Pirelli, the one-stop remains the quickest strategy to opt for – despite the increased pit speed limit.

In their report, those opting for the sole one-stop option would start the race on the medium compound tyres and would be expected to pit from laps 28 to 34 and would finish the race on the hards.

The other two options feature the two-stop possibility.

The first sees drivers starting on the faster soft compound tyre and will pit on laps 13-19 for the hard tyres, before pitting again for the medium compound.

Alternatively, the drivers could start on the medium compound tyres, pit on laps 18-24, for their first set of hard tyres before pitting again, on laps 43-49, for another set of hard tyres.
