The FIA has confirmed that Stroll, who crashed during Q1 in qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix, will be able to take part in the upcoming race after the Canadian failed to reach the 107% benchmark.

In the first third of qualifying, Stroll was racing through the final sector of the Zandvoort Circuit, but the Canadian ran over a grass verge on the corner entry. Under braking, the Aston Martin snapped around and sent him up the gravel trap and into the barrier.

He was unhurt and managed to return to the circuit before he made his way back into the pit lane after the incident. Despite being told to stay in the car in case he could head out, Stroll was soon out of the car and out of qualifying.

As the Aston Martin driver had not yet set a lap time, it meant he was outside the required 107% lap time, based on the fastest lap time of Q1.

After the session, the Stewards confirmed they had received a request from the team to allow him to compete at the Dutch Grand Prix.

They confirmed he would be able to race at the Dutch Grand Prix as the Canadian had set ‘satisfactory’ times during practice sessions. As such, Stroll will be placed last on the grid, in accordance with the F1 sporting regulations.

It was not the only crash of the weekend that Stroll had endured this weekend, as the Aston Martin driver hit the barrier at turn three during Free Practice 2, on Friday. The hit caused significant damage to the car and its suspension.

The team later broke the curfew, their first of two allowed, at the circuit, and they had to change the survival cell of Stroll’s car following the crash.

The 107% rule was created to prevent cars that drove too slowly from competing at events and serves as a pure safety measure for all competitors.
