Piastri started the race on pole position, having pipped Norris marginally in qualifying on Saturday, and the Australian completed the race in a commanding style, leading from start to finish. However, it was not the race Norris would’ve wanted on his return after the summer break.

In the dying embers of the race, Norris was forced to pull off to the side of the track between turns eight and nine with mechanical problems. It was speculated that the problem was related to a potential oil leak with the #4 McLaren. Norris’ retirement prompted the third and final safety car intervention.

As such, it also allowed fourth-placed Hadjar to move up into third place and seal his maiden podium finish, shortly after, behind both Piastri and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

Ferrari brought out two of the three safety car appearances. The first came from Lewis Hamilton, who was slapped with a moment of oversteer on lap 23, at turn three, and the seven-time world champion could not avoid the barrier after he collected his car’s slide.

Later on, Hamilton’s teammate Charles Leclerc retired at the same position later on in the race, on lap 53, after Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli understeered into the side of the Monegaque at turn three. Following the contact, it spun Leclerc around, who quickly hit the barrier and damaged the front nose of his SF-25, before retiring from the race.

Antonelli was later given a 10-second time penalty for the incident before he picked up another five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane, accumulating up to 15 seconds at the end of the race. As he did not serve the penalty in a pit stop, it dropped the Italian down to 16th in the finishing order.

Following Piastri’s commanding drive, it produced the Australian’s maiden Grand Slam (pole, fastest lap, win, and lead from start to finish), tying with the likes of Fernando Alonso, Leclerc, Damon Hill and Niki Lauda. It also means his championship advantage increases to 34 points in the drivers’ standings.

The next race is the final European race of the season, the Italian Grand Prix, next week, which is Ferrari’s home grand prix, which will be on the back of a double DNF for the Prancing Horse.
