F1 Mid-Season Ranking #16: Liam Lawson

F1 Mid-Season Ranking #16: Liam Lawson

New Zealand’s Liam Lawson has not enjoyed the smoothest full-time entries into Formula 1 after the Kiwi moved teams after two races, but how has he fared in 2025?

Liam Lawson had a bit of a turbulent start to his full-time Formula 1 career, having played a substantial role in both 2023 and 2024, replacing Daniel Ricciardo on both occasions.

After the departure of Sergio Perez, after the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Lawson was given the immediate call up to the senior squad, over experienced teammate Yuki Tsunoda.

However, after two races – Australia and China – Lawson was axed from Red Bull’s team and demoted back down to the sister squad, Racing Bulls, and replaced by Tsunoda. During that tenure, the New Zealander was whitewashed in both the race and qualifying trims with Max Verstappen outpacing and finishing higher than the new arrival.

The decision seemed to be a bit harsh considering the first two rounds of 2025 were at events of which Lawson had never competed at, and the next few races were familiar hunting grounds for the New Zealander. But, that is the cut-throat nature of F1.

Following his return to Racing Bulls, and after some time bedding into the team, the Kiwi has started to pull his season back around with decent performances.

We have ranked Austria as Lawson’s best outing so far in the season, for Racing Bulls, at 14 points, and he has scored double-figure scores in three of the last four races. This run of form has bounced back following an untimely crash at the British Grand Prix, on the first lap.

See below to see how we have ranked Lawson so far.

DISCLAIMER:

As previously confirmed, we rank drivers out of 20 points across each race weekend of the season. The highest performing, or best driver, of the weekend would get a maximum score of 20 points, while each driver below them would be ranked one point less.

If a driver does not start a race, they will be automatically given one point.

If more than one driver does not start a race, these points will be handed out in order it is announced i.e. Driver 1 (D1) is announced not to start two hours before the race start, but Driver 2 (D2) retires on the way to – or on – the grid, D1 will get one point and D2 will get two points.

Hi, I'm Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion. I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I've loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
