F1 Mid-Season Driver Rankings #20: Franco Colapinto
7th August 2025Franco Colapinto is in for another part-season at Alpine, and the Argentine has not performed as well as the man he has replaced, placing him low in our Formula 1 mid-season rankings.
Colapinto has been given a second opportunity to showcase that he deserves a permanent seat in Formula 1 as the Argentine was parachuted into the second seat at Alpine, replacing encumbered Jack Doohan.
His appointment in the second seat was based on a five-race test with the Ecclestone-based team spanning from the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix to the Austrian Grand Prix. However, he has now exceeded this original plan and looks to retain the seat for the remainder of the season.
The young Argentine impressed last year as he managed to score his first set of championship points in his second outing for Williams, when he replaced Logan Sargeant. However, this year has not been the same.
He has been prone to accidents in recent events, with a crash in his first race with Alpine at Imola, in Q1, and has repeated similar instances in the United Kingdom, during Q1. And a crash in a Pirelli tyre test after the Hungarian Grand Prix, in August, will certainly not help.
His standout performance – for us – was Monaco, where we ranked him his highest score to date with five points to his name. Canada was the Argentine’s second-best weekend in our rankings. The only benefit Colapinto will have for the remainder of 2025 is that the sport will return to venues where he has previously competed.
Across the eight races he had competed in, so far, the Argentine just hasn’t impressed. But there are still 10 more races this season (if he retains the seat) for his spark to return, that same spark he showed in the first races for Williams last year.
As such, we have given the Alpine driver 20 points so far this season and put him 20th overall, one point and place more than the man he replaced, Doohan. See below for our rankings.
– Colapinto did not participate in any races from the Australian Grand Prix to the Miami Grand Prix (R1-R6)
– Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix: 2 Points
– Monaco Grand Prix: 5 Points
– Spanish Grand Prix: 3 Points
– Canadian Grand Prix: 4 Points
– Austrian Grand Prix: 3 Points
– British Grand Prix: 1 Point
– Belgian Grand Prix: 1 Point
– Hungarian Grand Prix: 1 Point
Total Points: 20 Points
DISCLAIMER:
As previously confirmed, we rank drivers out of 20 points across each race weekend of the season. The highest performing, or best driver, of the weekend would get a maximum score of 20 points, while each driver below them would be ranked one point less.
As part of our scoring, Colapinto scored one point at the British Grand Prix even though he did not start the race.
We decided that if a driver does not start the race, unless they’re replaced, they will automatically score a single point. If more than one driver does not start, these points will be handed out in order it is announced i.e. Driver 1 (D1) is announced not to start two hours before the race start, but Driver 2 (D2) is forced to retire on the way to the grid, D1 will get one point and D2 will get two points.
