The Formula 1 championship leader, Piastri, had his advantage at the top of the standings reduced to just eight points after his teammate, Lando Norris, claimed victory at the British GP.
Piastri was left frustrated at the end of the British race as he finished behind Norris, after a 10-second penalty, to secure a 1-2 finish for McLaren at their home race.
The Australian was given a 10-second penalty for a safety car infringement mid-way through the race, where he broke with 59.2psi brake pressure, forcing Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to overtake accidentally before handing the position back.
“Today didn’t end how I wanted it to for me but well done to the team on a really successful day,” said Piastri.
“A 1-2 at our home Grand Prix is brilliant and it’s a great chunk of points for us. Whilst it was a frustrating one for me with the penalty, we had a rocket ship of a car, so thank you to the team for all their work which meant we could pull such a gap over the rest of the field.”

McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, stated that the penalty for the Australian ‘was difficult to take’ and that they would review the incident to understand what could’ve been done differently.
In the meantime, Piastri has said he will use the frustration from the British GP going into their next race weekend, as they hunt down their second consecutive championship victory. He said:
“I’ll use the frustration of today to fuel us further at the next weekend, but for now, we can reflect on a great weekend for McLaren.”
Since F1 returned to the European continent, the Woking-based team has taken back-to-back wins and back-to-back 1-2 finishes with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri finishing first and second, respectively, in both Austria and Britain.
Next up is the Belgian Grand Prix in two weeks, on July 25 – 27, at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps.
