Formula 1’s British Grand Prix can throw a spanner into the works on occasion, where the planned strategy can be slammed straight into the bin. Last year was mainly reactive to the conditions, thanks to a mid-race spell of rain, but this year, it is expected to be a dry race.
With that, and a soft range of Pirelli tyres for the British race, there are options for one or two stop strategies for Sunday’s race.
Although it is expected to be an expected dry race, the weather has hit Silverstone this morning, with a heavy downpour that impacted the running of Formula 3, which slipped away ahead of the Formula 2 race, despite a slight delay.
However, there is no further rain expected for the Grand Prix itself. So, with a dry race expected at Silverstone, what are the possible strategy options for the teams?
One-stopper
According to Pirelli, there is only one option – depending on how you run it, for a one-stop race at the British GP. This is predicted to be a Medium-Hard, or a Hard-Medium strategy, the former standing as the fastest option.
For those who start on the mediums, the first and only stop would come around laps 19 to 25 to swap over onto the hard tyres. In the other direction, starting on the hard compounds, the expected stop would be around laps 27 and 33, to go onto the mediums.
Two-stoppers
Pirelli suspect there could be two different strategies teams could opt for if they decided – or are forced – to take a two-stop race, both options have the respective drivers starting on the mediums.
The first option is a Medium-Hard-Hard strategy, with the first stop expected around laps 12 to 18, onto the hards before pitting for fresher white-ringed tyres, on lap 32 to 38.
Alternatively, teams and drivers could run a Medium-Hard-Soft strategy. The first stop, to change the mediums for the hards, would be predicted to take place from laps 14 to 20. Then the swap from the hards to the softs would take place on laps 36 to 42.
