Norris looked to be the strongest competitor for pole position ahead of qualifying around the iconic Red Bull Ring. He secured the fastest times in Free Practice 2 and 3, having been replaced in FP1 by McLaren rookie Alex Dunne.
Despite a small fire by the track, mid-session, in qualifying, Norris went on to secure the top spot in the grid by over half a second to his closest competitor, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
However, a couple of drivers were hindered by a spin from Alpine’s Pierre Gasly during the last runs of Q3, namely Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, which stopped their chances of challenging Norris.
