McLaren’s championship leader, and polesitter for the Spanish GP, Piastri controlled the race to secure his fifth win of the season, his seventh career victory.

Piastri got a great start when the race got underway to lead into the first corner relatively unchallenged and never looked to see his victory go under threat.

Norris finished the race in second, but it was a tricky start for the McLaren driver as the Briton dropped down to third by the exit of turn three. However, he was able to return to second place.

Verstappen looked to have third place signed, sealed and delivered as the chequered flag approached, but when Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli retired out on track – prompting a safety car – the Dutchman was equipped with the hards with a handful of laps left to go.

When the safety car returned to the pits, Piastri got the race going again ahead of Norris but Verstappen nearly lost it on the pit straight, which made him vulnerable to Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc behind.

The two touched as the Ferrari moved up into third, and finished in that position. But, as the pack entered turn one, Verstappen was forced onto the run off at turn 1 after Mercedes’ George Russell hit the back of the world champion.

Verstappen was later ordered to allow Russell by, which he slowed into turn five, on lap 64, only to speed back up and make contact with Russell. The Dutchman was later given a 10-second time penalty for the incident.

This dropped the four-time world champion down from fifth to 10th overall.

Top three;

  1. Oscar Piastri, McLaren
  2. Lando Norris, McLaren
  3. Charles Leclerc, Ferrari

Next up is the Canadian Grand Prix, in two weeks, on June 13 – 15.

Hi, I'm Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion. I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I've loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
