Leclerc completes clean sweep in disrupted Monaco GP FP2

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc has completed the clean sweep of practice sessions at his home race, the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, as both Isack Hadjar and Oscar Piastri crashed.

It was another good session for the local Monegasque as Leclerc backed up his performance from the opening hour as the Ferrari topped the timing boards, completing a clean sweep on Friday. 

However, as the drivers and teams pushed the limits, both McLaren’s championship leader, Oscar Piastri and Racing Bull’s Isack Hadjar fell foul of this, prompting two red flags. 

After eight minutes, Hadjar clipped the inside barrier of the Nouvelle Chicane. The contact ripped the Frenchman’s right rear tyre from its rim.  When the session resumed, it wasn’t long before the red flags were shown again; Piastri. 

The championship leader locked up into Sainte Devote and nose-dived into the barrier head-on. Piastri was able to reverse out and return to the pits, where he was given a new front wing.

How did the second hour finish?

Leclerc completed the clean sweep with his back-to-back fastest times on Friday, topping the timing boards with a 1m 11.355s. The Monegasque was narrowly ahead of Piastri, 0.038s behind, as Lewis Hamilton completed the top three in third. 

McLaren’s Lando Norris was best of the rest in fourth ahead of Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar in fifth and sixth. Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin completed the session down in seventh. 

Williams Alexander Albon, Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli and Red Bulls defending world champion Max Verstappen completed the top 10 in eighth to 10th, respectively. 

Verstappen’s teammate, Yuki Tsunoda finished the day down in 11th ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell and Williams’ Carlos Sainz, in 12th and 13th, respectively. 

Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto pipped Haas’ Oliver Bearman to round out the top 15. Nico Hulkenberg completed the Haas-filled Sauber sandwich in 16th. 

Alpine found themselves in the bottom four with Pierre Gasly in 17th and Franco Colapinto, 20th. Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon, Haas, filled the void in 18th and 19th.
