Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Haas’ Oliver Bearman have been given grid penalties for the upcoming grand prix. Stroll was slapped with a one-place grid penalty, whilst Bearman was given a 10-place penalty.

Stroll’s penalty came after Free Practice 1 when the Canadian collided with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. The Aston moved over, onto the racing line, into the path of the Ferrari, which resulted in the collision.

Bearman was given his punishment for overtaking Williams’ Carlos Sainz under red flag conditions after McLaren’s Oscar Piastri nose-dived into Sainte Devote, during Free Practice 2.

Stroll’s incident

In the first hour of practice, Stroll had cut across the circuit at the iconic hairpin at turn six and immediately put himself into the path of Leclerc. The Monegasque could not avoid a hit with the Aston in front, and both cars returned to the pits with damage.

The stewards deemed Stroll to be wholly to blame for the collision as his team had warned him of Leclerc’s imminent arrival, but he did not hear the radio message.

Following the incident, the stewards imposed a one-place grid penalty for Stroll.

Bearman’s incident

In the second practice session, FP2 suffered two red flags, but the second stop was problematic for Bearman as the Haas driver as he weaved his way through the swimming pool section just as the red flag came out.

Despite the red flag, Bearman overtook Sainz into Rascasse before he returned to the pit lane.

However, the stewards confirmed that the session was red-flagged ‘well before’ the overtake, and a light panel and dashboard confirmed the session was red-flagged.

They reported that the regulations require drivers to reduce their speed immediately and return slowly to the pits.

Bearman had argued that, even though he had seen the red flags, he did not want to slow down abruptly as he believed it would be more dangerous and his way was safer. The stewards disagreed with this view.

Due to no mitigating factor for overtaking Sainz under red flags, the stewards imposed a 10-place grid penalty on Bearman, with two penalty points to be added to his license.
