The iconic Portugal rally marks a return to gravel which will feature heavily in the next seven rallies, before returning to tarmac in October.

It is known for its fast and technical gravel roads which start off soft and sandy but soon turn harder as the cars blitz their way through the stages. It will be the first return to gravel following the Safari Rally Kenya event, back in March.

A total of 12 crews will tackle the event with some drivers. Toyota will host a five-car lineup, Hyundai will sport their usual trio and M-Sport will bring four crews to Portugal.

EA reaches the ‘end of the road’ with WRC.

Toyota

The reigning world champions will bring a five-crew team to the event with Sebastien Ogier continuing with the team following his second-place finish in the Canary Islands.

Elfyn Evans, the championship leader, will continue to be the first out on the road when the event gets underway ahead of fellow teammates, Kalle Rovanpera, Takamoto Katsuta and Sami Pajari.

Hyundai

Hyundai, as previously mentioned, will continue to sport their usual trio of drivers with the defending champion, Theirry Neuville leading the team in the drivers standings in third.

The Belgian will be accompanied by his other two teammates Ott Tanak and Adrien Fourmaux.

Ford

M-Sport will take an extended driver line-up to the Portugal rally as four crews are expected to compete in the event, in M-Sport’s Ford Puma’s.

Gregoire Munster and Joshua McErlean will continue in their full-time positions with the team. However, Martins Sesks will rejoin the team for the event alongside local privateer Diogo Salvi and Axel Coronado.

Rovanpera wins WRC Rally Islas Canarias ahead of Ogier and Evans

Rally Portugal will get underway next week on May 15 – 18.

Hi, I'm Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion. I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I've loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
