The FIA have released statements which explained why some drivers escaped punishment for safety car infringements at the Australian Grand Prix.

In the early stages of Formula 1’s Australian GP, which was conducted in changing conditions, four drivers were noted-then-investigated for ‘safety car infringements.’

This followed crashes from both Alpine’s Jack Doohan and Williams’ Carlos Sainz who both crashed on the first lap of the season-opener.

Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso was the first driver to be noted-then-investigated for a safety car infringement. He was soon joined by Racing Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda, Williams’ Alexander Albon and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.

It was deemed the drivers had exceeded the 10-car length allowance prescribed in the regulations but all four drivers avoided penalties as the stewards ‘no further action’ would be taken.

In the respective documents, the Stewards said:

“The Stewards reviewed positioning/marshalling system data, video and in-car video evidence.

“Although the gap to the previous car exceeded the 10 car lengths prescribed in the regulations, the Stewards considered the weather conditions and also that the correct gap was restored well prior to the restart, as mitigating circumstances in this case.

“Hence no penalty is applied.”

The only exception to this statement was Alonso, as the stewards had taken into consideration that the Spaniard went off-track on that particular lap.

That factor was also deemed a mitigating factor in his outcome.

McLaren’s Lando Norris went on to win the race ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ George Russell.
