McLaren entered 2025 as favourites to secure the world championship title, following their title win last season, and their drivers kicked off their championship hopes with a front-row lockout in the first round of the season.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen initially put down the gauntlet in Q3 to take provisional pole position in the first runs of Q3.
In the last runs, Piastri snatched pole with a very strong lap, which saw him go four-tenths faster and thrill the spectators in attendance. However, it was not to be as Norris, who had his first run in Q3 deleted for track limits, pipped his teammate by the narrow margin of 0.084s.

As the chequered flag fell, Norris was not beaten from the top spot, and Piastri secured a second-place start at his home Grand Prix. Whilst Provisional pole sitter Verstappen completed the top three in third.
It marks Norris’s 10th career, and second consecutive, pole position following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix season finale in 2024.
Similarly, it marks McLaren’s second consecutive front-row lockout since the 2024 season finale.
Mercedes George Russell and Racing Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda completed the top five in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Hi, I’m Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion.
I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I’ve loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
