How can McLaren or Ferrari win the championship?

The Constructors Championship will be decided this weekend with either McLaren or Ferrari claiming the title, but how would either win the championship?

After 23 races, the team’s championship has come down to two teams in Abu Dhabi; McLaren and Ferrari. Despite winning last time with Max Verstappen, last weekend, Red Bull Racing were eliminated from championship contention in Qatar.

The championship win, for either McLaren or Ferrari, will end a championship drought for the winning constructor. McLaren have waited the longest since they last won the constructors title in 1998, whereas Ferrari secured victory in 2008.

Between McLaren and Ferrari, there is a maximum of 44 points up for grabs this weekend which includes the fastest lap point (for the final time), if the winning team finishes one-and-two.

For McLaren to win the championship, they have to out-score Ferrari by 13 points. This means if either car won the race, or finish in the top four, it would hand the championship to the Woking-based team.

On the other hand, for Ferrari, the Scuderia need to out-score McLaren by 22 points. To have a good chance of this, Charles Leclerc or Carlos Sainz would need to win the race with the other driver finishing somewhere nearby – preferably on the podium.

However, the advantage lies with McLaren who has a 21-point advantage over Ferrari going into Abu Dhabi meaning it is their title to lose.

McLaren will be champions:

  • If both cars finish inside the top four
  • If Norris or Piastri wins the Grand Prix
  • Not outscored by Ferrari by 24 points or more

Ferrari will be champions:

  • If they outscore McLaren by 21 points or more, if they win the race
  • If they outscore McLaren by 22 points or more, if they do not win the race
