McLaren’s Lando Norris secured the fastest lap to end the first day of running at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri.

All 20 regular F1 drivers returned to the Yas Marina Circuit, in Abu Dhabi, for the second hour of practice after some missed out the opening hour due to the FP1 rookies taking their place.

Lance Stroll, Max Verstappen, Oscar Piastri, Alexander Albon, Yuki Tsunoda and Carlos Sainz returned to the action for Aston Martin, Red Bull, McLaren, Williams, Visa Cash App RB and Ferrari respectively after sitting out FP1.

Although it was the second official session of the weekend, the conditions under the falling sun would be more representative to what the drivers and teams will experience in Saturday’s qualifying and Sunday’s race sessions.

After the second hour of running, Norris was the fastest driver out on track with a lap time of 1m 23.517s and stood two-tenths ahead of teammate Piastri, leaving Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg to surprise and round out the top three.

Ferrari’s departing driver and their incoming driver, Sainz and Lewis Hamilton (who will compete in his final race with Mercedes this weekend), rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth.

Sainz’s teammate, Charles Leclerc, who will endure a 10-place grid penalty for a new energy store in the race, finished the hour in sixth ahead of Kick Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas and Haas’ Kevin Magnussen in seventh and eighth.

Albon and Tsunoda rounded out the top 10 in ninth and 10th respectively. The latter’s teammate, Liam Lawson finished just behind his teammate in 11th ahead of Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Mercedes’ George Russell, 12th and 13th.

Red Bull Racing’s Sergio Perez and Kick Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu completed the top 15, respectively.

Aston Martin’s pairing of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll completed the second hour of action down in 16th and 18th, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen squishing in between in 17th.

Formula 1’s newest rookies of 2024: Jack Doohan (Alpine) and Franco Colapinto (Williams), completed the 20-car field in 19th and 20th respectively.
