Despite a fourth-place start on the grid, Ferrari has secured their first win at Monza since 2019 when Leclerc last won at the famous Monza track.
Having taken second place on the first lap, when Oscar Piastri passed his teammate – and championship contender – Lando Norris into the Della Roggia Chicane, Leclerc completed an ambitious one-stop strategy to take home a spectacular win at Ferrari’s home ground.
As a result, it gives the Monegasque his second win of the season after his win at Monaco earlier on this year and his seventh career victory. It’s also the second win for Leclerc at Monza following his maiden win there back in 2019.
The two McLarens – who had once led the race – rounded out the podium with Piastri and Norris respectively, having passed the slower Ferrari of Carlos Sainz late on in the race. This will bolster their championship standings in their title fight with Red Bull Racing.
As it currently stands, McLaren has cut down Red Bull’s lead in the constructors championship by 22 points. Now eight points separate the top two in the constructors championship.
Sainz completed the race in fourth place ahead of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen completed the race down in sixth.
Verstappen will remain the overall leading driver in the championship with Norris taking eight points out of the Dutchman’s lead. Provisionally the two drivers are now separated by 62 points (subject to post-race scrutineering.)
Mercedes’ George Russell, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, Williams’ Alexander Albon and Haas’ Kevin Magnussen complete the top 10, in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th.
