Hamilton quickest in Italian GP FP2 after Magnussen crash

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton topped the timing boards to wrap up Friday’s action at the Italian Grand Prix whilst Haas’ Kevin Magnussen crashed at turn seven.

It was once again a very busy start on the Italian circuit with all but Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and Mercedes’ George Russell out on the track within the first five minutes. 

All of the drivers were out on the medium compounds in their first stints of second practice.

At the halfway mark of the session, the session was once again red flagged making it two-for-two after FP1’s red flag. 

This stoppage was caused by Haas’ Kevin Magnussen who spun out at turn seven, the second Lesmo corner, before skipping across the gravel and nose-diving into the barrier. 

After 11 minutes the session was resumed and Perez was the first driver to pull out onto the track but he had Russell close on his heels. It wasn’t long before the Mercedes driver overtook the Mexican to get clean air. 

Despite Magnussen’s crash, this was the only stoppage of the session and FP2 concluded with Hamilton on top ahead of Norris by 0.003s. 

Where did the field finish FP2?

Hamilton topped the timing boards with the fastest lap of the weekend so far, with a 1m 20.738, as Norris and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz rounded out the top three. 

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri once again found himself inside the top five, in fourth, ahead of Ferrari’s Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc. The top five drivers were all separated by 0.154s.

In his first session of the weekend, Russell could only top a sixth-fastest lap overall but found himself ahead of Haas’ surviving car of Nico Hulkenberg and RB’s Daniel Ricciardo in seventh and eighth respectively. 

The Aston Martin duo of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll rounded out the top 10. 

Kick Sauber had a mixed session with Valtteri Bottas being the fastest driver inside the bottom 10, in 11th, whereas Zhou Gunayu lay on the bottom of the order down in 20th. 

Despite his crash, Magnussen still secured the 12th-fastest lap overall ahead of Williams’ Alexander Albon. The Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez completed the top 15, in 14th and 15th respectively. 

This left RB’s Yuki Tsunoda to lead the bottom five drivers, in 16th, with Williams’ Franco Colapinto just behind in 17th. The Alpine duo of Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon completed the order in 18th and 19th, ahead of Zhou.
