F1 Italian GP: what are the potential tyre strategies?

Pirelli has revealed the possible tyre strategies for the teams and drivers can opt for around the Italian Grand Prix, at Monza.

53 laps lie ahead of the drivers at Italy’s famous temple of speed which spans a total of 5.693km, totalling an almighty race distance of 306.72km.

McLaren’s championship contender, Lando Norris lines up in pole position with his teammate, Oscar Piastri, starting alongside locking out the front row.

However, Norris’ championship contender, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, had a poor qualifying and could only muster seventh for Sunday’s grid, behind the two McLarens, Ferraris and Mercedes.

With a championship on the line and an advantage in Norris’ favour, tyre strategy could be pivotal to securing the win or having it taken out of their hands.

However, Pirelli believes the one-stop is the way to go for the Italian GP.

In their pre-race tyre strategies, the tyre supplier does not believe starting on the soft tyres is the way to go as it does not appear in their selection.

Pirelli believes the quickest race times would be to either start on the medium compounds or the hard tyres. Preferably, drivers will want to start the race on the mediums and switch over to the hards.

There are two options with this strategy, according to Pirelli the quickest option would be to pit on laps 19-25 for the hards. Alternatively, they could commit to a two-stop and pit on laps 11-16, onto the hards, and pit again on laps 30-36 for a fresh set of hards

However, those starting further down the field may opt for the hard tyres as their starting tyre.

In this instance, the drivers could hold out on a one-stop with their mandatory stop coming at laps 27-33 for the mediums, to see them until the end.
