Although the forecast had heavy rain to fall during qualifying, the session was bone dry meaning the drivers could utilise the quickest and softest rubber of the Pirelli range at the Zandvoort Circuit.
By the end of the first true competitive session, since the sport returned to from the summer break, it was Norris who set the pace and went on to take pole position ahead of the Dutch GP.
The McLaren driver, embroiled in his championship fight with Verstappen, claimed his third pole position of the season – fourth overall – to edge out the Dutch Red Bull driver by 0.356 seconds.
This result denies Verstappen a fourth consecutive pole position, on home soil, as the triple world champion has claimed every pole since the Dutch GP returned to the calendar.
At the same time, the reigning world champion finds himself sandwiched in between the two McLarens as Oscar Piastri completed the top three over four-tenths off his teammate.
Heading into the race, on Sunday, it will put on an enticing prospect in terms of the championship.
McLaren remains 42 points away from Red Bull Racing, in the constructors standings, and Norris stands 76 points behind the Dutch world champion in the drivers championship.

Hi, I’m Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion.
I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I’ve loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
