On Tuesday, the FIA revealed the third meeting of the Formula 1 Commission took place at the Formula One Management offices, in London.

In this meeting, the involved parties discussed a number of topics which was chaired by the FIA’s Single-Seater Director Nikolas Tombazis and F1 President and CEO, Stefano Domenicali.

The topics discussed updates to the technical and sporting regulations which included; the 2026 regulations, pre-season testing for 2026 and F1 championship points.

After a recent proposal, which asked to consider the distribution of points being extended past 10th place, it has been ‘unanimously agreed’ that no changed will be made to the championship points format which means no driver or team will earn points if they finish in 11th or lower.

The cars and drivers will also see a bit of an increase of 2kg for 2025.The driver minimum weight will be increased from 80kg to 82kg whilst the cars will go from 798kg to 800kg.

2024 and 2025 only see three days of testing which has become the norm. However, according to the statement, pre-season testing will increase in 2026 up to nine days which will be ‘split’ across three ‘test events.’

Amongst other discussions, the 2026 regulations and Financial regulations were also discussed.

The commission confirmed costs that relate to Maternity/Paternity lead, sick lead and ‘team entertainment’ should remain outside the cost cap regulations.

In regards to the 2026 regulations, the teams still hope for ‘fast and closer racing’ which promotes the entertainment value of the sport. In the statement, the FIA said:

“Following further discussions during upcoming Technical and Sporting Advisory committees, an update on the 2026 Regulations relating to sporting and technical regulations will be presented at the World Motor Sport Council on October 17. An extraordinary F1 Commission meeting will take place on October 2 to discuss 2026 matters.”

Despite what was said in the meeting, all regulatory changes will remain subject to approval from the FIA World Motor Sport Council.
