Sergio Perez crashes heavily in Hungary GP qualifying

Sergio Perez, of Red Bull, suffered a heavy crash in qualifying during the Hungarian Grand Prix marking his second-consecutive Q1 elimination.

Perez, who is under immense pressure to keep hold of his Formula 1 career, has crashed out for a second consecutive weekend at the Hungarian GP.

Ahead of qualifying, the heavens had opened slightly with conditions looking to be susceptible for intermediate tyres. However, the drivers – including Perez – opted for slick tyres.

Halfway through Q1, Perez was pushing to improve his position of ninth on the timing boards but as the Mexican driver touched the kerbs on entry to turn eight the backend stepped out.

It sent Perez’s car into a sudden spin, one he couldn’t escape, and his RB20 was slammed into the barrier. The Mexican driver was okay and quickly got out of the car but the car was not in working condition.

Last time out, Perez crashed out in Silverstone at the British Grand Prix when the session changed from wet to dry conditions.

In that session, he had peeled into the pit lane – at the halfway point of Q1 – and swapped his intermediates to the soft compounds.

Again, Perez lost control in the damp conditions and beached his car in the gravel at Copse Corner.

Despite a two-year extension with Red Bull announced earlier on in the year, speculation has increased – and intensified – recently regarding the Red Bull driver’s career.

A possible mid-season driver change is rumoured with Liam Lawson being named as a driver who could, potentially, replace the underperforming driver.

It has been speculated that the Mexican driver has been given a two-race deadline (Hungary and Belgium) to turn his form around to keep his seat for the remainder of the season.
