Piastri adds another win to his belt at the Hungarian Grand Prix but it marks his first-ever grand prix victory as the Australian led McLaren to another one-two victory.
When the lights went out, Piastri, Norris and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen went three-wide into turn 1 with the Australian winning that battle on the corner exit.
From there, the 2021 Formula 2 world champion led for the majority of the race until the second phase of pit stops – this is when the trouble started.
The team pitted Norris, on lap 45, which allowed the Briton to take the race lead which he was reluctant to give up.
Following several pleas to Norris to fall back, to nurse his tyres, and allow McLaren to let Piastri through, it looked as if the 2024 Miami Grand Prix race winner was not going to allow it to happen.
On the last time of asking, with Norris’ race engineer stating ‘please do it now,’ the race winner obeyed the instruction and allowed Piastri through, on lap 68 of 70.
As a result, the Australian went on to secure his maiden win at the Hungaroring.
Piastri now joins the likes of Esteban Ocon, Damon Hill, Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso and Heikki Kovalainen who took their first wins at the track.
Piastri’s win stands as the 49th one-two finish for McLaren. The last time this was achieved was back in 2021 with Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris, when Verstappen and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton crashed out.

Hi, I’m Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion.
I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I’ve loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
